just came back from the city on bike and was dripping with sweat and when i got to my street they had the fire hydrant blasting - a really strong jet. so i went home got changed and went and stood in it. there were some other random adults bu mainly a bunch of kids screaming. then one guy at the hydrant with a in can with no ends and he puts it over the jet and directs it. everyone stands on the other side of the st and waits to get blasted. kinda fun.

not sure if my neighbours thought i was weird

as we negotiate the space between us we are also finding our creative process and practice. as part of this continued effort to collaborate across continents we have begun a vimeo 'sketch' book. the idea being that we pass ideas back and forth, responding to prompts and dialogue in a immediate way, with whatever resources are around us. the bigger picture being that these pieces of work act as research to create a more final 'polished' piece whilst at the same time becoming a body of work in themselves.

Have you ever seen a twin banana? Two bananas in one skin. I had one for breakfast. Well actually I had one and Aaron had another, it was a very romantic moment. I gave him the first born as a symbol of my love. If I was going to spend a day doing a photo project I would do it on bananas in the city. They are everywhere. We saw a couple embracing on a street corner yesterday, They were blackened by the sun, but so engrossed in each other that their self-sacrifice was worthwhile.

taken at the bloomsbury festival london. and installation based on the eygptian belief that names were an important element and living part of each human individual. so long as one's name was remembered the deceased were believed to be immortal. visitors were asked to contribute a bird to the installation bearing their name, or someone else's they wished to be immortal.

the finished package actually included more articles and a little book listing all the photographers that took part in the HOST gallery summer show.

in my new job i get to take home all the weekend paper supplements at the end of the week. sometimes i feel overwhelmed by the amount of articles i want to send to amy. i had to seal the envelop and just send it, because i could have gone on filling it for a long time.

i bought amy this t-shirt. i don't know what because i am seriously broke right now and it was a lot more than i would normally pay for a dress let alone a t-shirt (i don't spend much on clothes...so its not as wildly expensive as you may think. but for me it was). but it was very strange. i felt i had to, and before i knew it i was handing over my card to pay. it was 'right'. my nickname is banana.

afterwards i was reflecting on why i felt such an urge to buy it for her. and i thought perhaps through material things we try to bring people we care about closer. when she wears that t-shirt she will think off me. if people ask her about it she will have to tell a story that includes me.

the fact that it was expensive (or perhaps more that it was from a little t-shirt boutique near convent garden) strangely added to my desire to buy it for her despite my dire financial state right now. i know how hard she works and i wanted to buy her something 'special'.

for most of our childhood, until the age of about 18, we never bought each other presents, christmas or birthday, because we thought it was weird and pointless. we shared everything anyway, and most of experiences were together (although i doubt we could have articulated why we didn't buy each other presents at the time, we just found it weird).

as we have grown older, developed our own identities and moved apart in physical distance we buy things/find things/make things/send things regularly to each other throughout the year. the more we have developed our own identities the more i see that i want to send her. perhaps as a way to keep us connected, share experiences and close the physical space between us and try to keep our experiences shared. but also because we know what ever we send will be received with understanding and appreciation. she'll 'get it'.

i recently went to see candice breitz exhibition 'factum', at the white cube gallery in london.

'factum is a series of in-depth video portraits of twins - and one set of triplets - that extends Breitz's ongoing interest in doubling, portraiture and identity. title after robert rauschenberg's factum I and II (1957) near-identical twin paintings, Breitz's 'factum' explores the modes of internal and external forces that drive individuation.'

i, we, have never really heard other twins about what it is to be a twin, and i found the experience quite emotional and intense, in the most positive of ways. i felt lucky to be a twin and sad that amy wasn't there to see the exhibition with me.

a couple of things that the twins in the exhibition talked about and i can strongly relate to are the feelings of completeness that come from being a twin, and the absolute unknowing of what you would do if your twin died.

there were lots of things in the exhibition that could relate to most sibling relationships, or even just relationships in general, but i still came away with the feeling that there is something special about twins and their relationship, i just can't tell you what or why, but the exhibition did make me realise that its probably something to do with coming from the same egg.

an article about about twins caught my eye. it was about the tyler and cameron winkevoss, who make up a oxford boating team, but also reportedly made an out of court deal with the founder of facebook for stealing their idea. at the end of the article tyler was quoted as saying 'i'm not a man who likes to define his identity too narrowly'. i found this ironic seeing as through out the article they were referred to as 'the twins'.

'the body remembers, the bones remember, the joints remember, even the little finger remembers. memory is lodged in pictures and feelings in the cells themselves. like a sponge filled with water, any where the flesh is pressed, wrung, even touched lightly, a memory may flow out in a stream.'

for negotiationofspace the glass ‘aquarium’ at the casino luxembourg is a representation of that box in the brain labelled ‘memory’. we can share our memories with others but they are always contained within ourselves. this is mirrored by the structure of the aquarium - memories are explored and contained within the glass structure, but visible to those outside.

it is our belief that memory, in a sense, makes you who you are. consciously or consciously.

but what happens when you share your formative daily experiences with another, and the boundaries of your memories become blurred with someone else’s? when you can’t recognise yourself in photos? when you are not sure if you were really there or just experienced it through another?

negotiationofspace is the exploration of the nature of twins from the inside out. part of being a twin, for us, is this sharing memories, a merging of identity.

negotiationofspace proposes during the residency the aquarium becomes an exploration of boundaries, allowing the concept of memory – a shifting, intangible experience to be explored physically and visually, bringing it into reality.

although it is perhaps more extreme in the case of twins, the confusion of memory/memories is not unique to our situation - most people will be able to relate to this kind of sensation before, which is what we would like to play with.

the memory of our exploration will be left in the aquarium as an installation consisting of video/movement, images, text and objects intrinsically linked to/rich with memory, in our case childhood dresses

the presence of these bridesmaid dresses has been a recurring theme within our work to date. visually the sight of two adult twins in two identical children’s dresses provides a strong image. but it represents more than aesthetics, it is a physicalisation of a memory, a point in time preserved, and therefore a tool to enable the mapping of time. With this starting point we are able to explore who we are now, from what we were.

hannah is a dancer, and throughout the course of the residency will work physically with the ideas mentioned above, such as memory and the blurring of boundaries, taking inspiration from these concepts, as well as from the space and physical objects, such as the dresses.

the very act of producing and choreographing movement is an act of memory, therefore this process of creation will create an extra layer of exploration - through improvisation, structured work and choreographic devices new memories will emerge from old ones.

amy is not a dancer, but this project intends to blur the boundaries. by learning movement, and the manipulation of the ‘memory’ we leave behind in the installation, we intend to induce a sense of confusion for those who experience it.

amy is a photographer, and throughout the course of the residency will work visually with the ideas mentioned above, such as memory and the blurring of boundaries, taking inspiration from these concepts, as well as from the space and the physical objects, such as the dress.

the very act of capturing and producing images is an act of memory, therefore assists this exploration - through the recording of the creative process visually new memories will emerge from old ones.

hannah is not a photographer, but this project intends to blur the boundaries. by capturing images, and the manipulation of the ‘memory’ left in the installation after the residency the audience will be left with a feeling of confusion. who was who, and who did what?

proposal to bodyworlds 2010

dancers work with their bodies every single day, most try to understand their physicality from the inside out. dance inspires awe of the body. body worlds provides a unique setting for both an exploration and celebration of the body through dance.

negotiationofspace proposes a meeting of these two worlds - the internal anatomy, provided by body worlds, and the external movement that is a direct result of the internal structure, shown through dance. by seeing the body as it is constructed, in juxtaposition with the body in motion, it will give the general public a unique and whole experience of the human body.

suggested performance options

there are number of ways to structure this collaboration, including;

1. a ‘durational’ installation performed by hannah buckley. in this case the dancer would become an exhibit, with continuous movement through out the day, responding to what she sees around her and exploring the functionality of her body.

2. a pre prepared solo, performed by hannah buckley. this would consist of a development of the solo ‘amytalk’, which would move from abstract concepts of the body in to a functional exploration of the body. this could be performed at set times through out the day.

3. a week long ‘residency’, during which hannah buckley would work live in the exhibition space to create a work, taking inspiration from her surroundings.

a final idea has not been suggested as it was thought best to leave this decision to body worlds, in relation to what is the most preferable option for them.

conclusion

as mentioned earlier negotiationofspace came from the desire to explore our experience as twins, consequently this factor informs all the work we create, although, the visibility of this influence varies from piece to piece.

the biology and phenomena that is identical twins lends a special relevance to this collaborative celebration of the wonders of the human body.

i saw this and instantly thought of me and amy. it describes us better than words.

its always fascinating to see other twins. a pair of identical girls came into the restaurant i work at the other day and i was fascinated to watch as the sat with one itching or stroking the other's hand. its always intriguing to see another set of twins and how they interact. each pair is so unique and has its quirks and often oddities.

today i met with charles grant - typographical perfectionist and negotiationofspace's logo creator. we met to discuss the finer details and come to conclusions on the kind of things which turns an excellent logo into an amazing logo.

what struck me as we discussed thickness of font, readability, spacing etc etc over pizza and salad was that negotiationofspace whilst in the first steps of finding it's identity was doing so in exactly the way we hoped for.

through the sharing of ideas and learning from each other, through engaging with passionate, talented people, through talking and most importantly through enjoying the process (well i am at least, i hope charles does too) negotiationofspace plans to evolve.

the logo itself is unique and special. within the design are two small characters - a hand drawn sketch that charles quickly drew on the back of an envelope in response to our requests. it was the first thing he did but it has become one of the most important elements of the design. in today's discussion we talked about how this small element, a simple part in the overall design must not loose any of it's 'sketchyness', become too computerised or lose spontaneity - it is a reaction, a personal response, emotional and human, it is negotiation between us and him.

at the event amy wrote about, in the previous blog, there was an interesting situation that left us thinking ? and also gave us an inside view into (some) peoples' perception of twins.

while standing in our identical uniform, in our own little world, discussing which of the guests outfits we liked, another member of the waiting on team came over to answer a question her and other staff had been wondering - were we twins or just sisters? 'twins.' we replied. 'so why do you have different haircuts?' she then asked.

to be honest the stupidity of this question threw me and i didn't really know how to answer. luckily amy saved the day, 'because we're different people' she replied.

a friend by your side

we had forgotten what it is like to enter a new situation as a twin, not a single entity. having spent more time apart than together over the last few years we have both come accustomed to entering new situations alone. but last thursday, in the name of work we went into a new situation, with new people, wearing the exactly the same.

we were a 'team'. we didn't talk to anyone. it was us against the world. we had forgotten what its like to go into new situations with your friend at your side. some one to whisper to and share inside jokes.

having taken a step back to explore what being a twin means we can see what as children we had taken for granted is unique and special. we realised when we were young we never have to worry, we always had someone who knew what we were going through.

last night we went to watch Jo Rose perform in manchester. the supporting 'band' was the Minikins, a brother/sister duet that hail from canada. Gabriel Minnikin lives in manchester, while sister Ruth lives in canada. she is here visiting, and so they have a few gigs together on the little isle.

while is watching them i thought how great it is to be able to do stuff creatively with your sibling. and i got excited about what adventures negotiationofspace might hold for us...

negotiationofspace in The Rose Graden, Bradford Playhouse

on wed 15th of july negotiationofspace took part in a magical evening of performance at The Rose Garden at the Bradford Playhouse.

The Rose Garden is a quite fantastic installation that ran from the 9th-17th of july, transforming a black room in to a winding maze of wicker, trees and roses which provided hidden performance spaces.

the evening of the 15th was curated by Isabelle Cressy, and included performances/choreograohy by Kip Johnson, Mary Eddowes, Lindy Nsingo, Martha Grover and negotiationofspace.

the evening took was shaped as a guided tour, (directed by Kip Johnson, based on the idea of a national trust tour gone wrong) and it was Dwayne Simm's excellent, excellent, skills as a slightly odd tour guide that pulled the whole evening together. he led the audience around the maze, with facts such as 'the rose needs 5 hours of direct sunlight a day', or asking them to feel how sharp the rose thorns were, whilst leading them to come across 'happenings', such as Martha, suspended in a harness between a cobweb of tights.

negotiationofspace's space included a park bench and a pond. for the event we had focused on the idea of nostalgia, and recreated a photo of us from when we were bridesmaids, age 6, using the original dresses. on the night we wore the dress and played with the idea of childhood.

apparently most people were a little bit freaked out by too very similar looking adults dress in children's' dresses. thats one thing about being a twin. sometimes i forget it freaks people out.

but we had fun unintentionally scaring people and the whole evening was went down well..so watch this space for more Rose Garden events!

sharing the summer

at the end of this week hannah will finish the school term and return home for the summer. having recently returned home from new york i will also be there. this is the first summer in 4 years where we will both be at home together. last week i went to leeds to stay with her and realised that getting used to being a twin again will take a moment. in the life i was building over the past year being a twin wasn't part of the main picture - of course it was there but my identity was built around me.

when we're together and back in the place where we've always been 'the twins' its hard to not let that fact dominate. walking into a party of hannah's friends, many who haven't met me and watching heads swivel and hearing mummers of 'wow its another hannah' reminded me that people see us before they see the individual.

while looking trying to find some pictures for the next project that me and amy are doing i looked through loads of old childhood photos. two things occurred to me..

one was that there were are few photos that seemed to be invading a world that only me and amy were part of. this was strange to see. i never feel like we are twins that are closed to external worlds, but i do remember mum once saying we felt like a secret society that she wasn't allowed in to...

two, our childhood was filled with love and adventures. we were/are very lucky.

negotiationofspace at Figment2009 on Governors Island begins our journey, setting the tone for further discovery. With the involvement of the public and fellow twins, paths will be created and leads followed. This exploration is new to us, unfolding in real time. We will draw on elements which intrigue us and others. For example questions.

When meeting twins for the first time a number of questions usually arise. Questions make a good place to begin. A point to depart from.

People write questions/thoughts/opinions for us and we will respond someway with an answer through our blog
• Exhibition space will be surrounded by an interpretation of the questions most frequently
asked to us.

at school i saw a poster advertising a party for someone's twentieth birthday. it was a 'gemini' party. it said that guests had to come in two's and dress alike. i realised that for most people there is a novelty in looking like someone else. i should have turned up with amy. that would have freaked 'em out.

amy just got accepted into two top universities in NYC to do photography. i was surprised how excited i got. over the past year or so i feel that she has developed her creativeness more and more. and it makes me happy. it feels nice to have a life long artistic collaborator. i think sharing a creative space will get better and better.

having dragged my wobbly granny cart full of art supplies for this weekend's installation through rush hour subways i finally reached the waiting room for the governors island ferry. sweaty and flustered from my cagoule, the horrible humidity and grey drizzle i plopped myself on the bench and took a minute to get my mind together.

the past few days of preparation have left me uptight and nervous - and it dawned on me today why... this is probably one of the first times in my life when i have done something totally on my own. of course on a day to day basis i do lots of things on my own, in fact i enjoy my own company. but when it comes to big 'stuff', projects, things i want to do well at or that are important i have always had my sister there. or once we were doing our own thing i had boyfriends or fellow collaborators to offer emotional and physical support.

suddenly i felt lonely. and intimidated by the realisation that this weekend's success rests on my shoulders.

and then just at the right moment my friend johan appeared. and suddenly i felt less lonely but i also knew that doing this alone will be just fine.

Negotiationofspace will be having an installation at Figment festival from June 12 - 14, as part of the summer long arts event on Governors Island NYC.

The installation will include the tacky game show 'Twinny Challenge' and is hoping to capture the portraits of as many twins as possible

today we will begin exploring the spaces we inhabit. each day we will take a snapshot of various places we live in.

whilst watching hannah's improvisation it dawned on me that although i know what she does - dance, i have no idea about her day to day routine at school. it was if the video was giving me insight into the life of my own sister. it was strange to me not know. at one time i knew about every minute of her day, because i was there.

clips from footage recorded of an improvisation (hence the repetitive nature) for my movement studies assessment. the stimulus was my twin sister talking. (while also trying to be more 'expansive' as instructed by my teachers). i also feel its a good example of our different spaces. the studio is something so familiar for me, where i spend a lot of my life at this point. not really a space she enters.

I also did not realise that the i wasn't dancing in the area the camera was recording..so i missed a lot of stuff...and hence the reason i keep coming in from the right side of the screen.....
